Week 2: State of HVUUC -- Services, Music, & Religious Education

As we begin a new year and the second half of the fiscal year, we wanted to share how the Board of Trustees, committees, and volunteers have worked diligently to sustain our church and members during this very different year. During January we will share inspirational news about the state of the church.

For week 2 we’re sharing information about worship services, the music program, and religious education.

HVUUC first closed its campus on March 15, 2020, and we did not have a service that week. However, we premiered our first virtual service on YouTube at 11 a.m. on March 22. As of January 11, 2021, we have aired 44 services.

Each service is an incredible collaboration by many members and committees of the church, including Rev. Briere, the Religious Services Committee, the Music Committee, Wendy H, Charis C, Ann L, Cindi H, and special guests, and our skills (and our ambition) have grown. HVUUC’s YouTube channel now has more than 160 subscribers! Our virtual services are a great outreach for the church—we know that some of these subscribers are new visitors and prospective members.

Music Program

The music committee has produced 13 virtual choir pieces, including 5 pieces for Festivals of Light alone. The music committee, our talented congregation, Charis C (our new Music Program Director hired in June), and Wendy H have worked incredibly hard to ensure we have inspirational music during every service, and Kim R developed a music library from past in-person musical recordings for us to pull from for services.

Sarah W, our Director of Religious Education (DRE), and the RE Collaborative have adapted creatively as well. HVUUC serves more than 60 youth in our community by delivering Religious Education kits about every other week. Sarah hosts a Kids Coffee Hour on the alternating Sundays. In November Sarah launched Pen Pal Connections, an intergenerational project that includes 13 pairs of youth-adult pen pals. Sarah S and Sarah W, our camp codirectors, also are adapting our summer camp to be a subscription box service for 2021. The RE Collaborative is grateful for the small army of volunteers that make all this possible.

The Board of Trustees is always available for your questions and comments. Please contact us if we can assist you at board@hvuuc.org.

In fellowship,

Dana York, President, Board of Trustees

Week 1: Finances

In week 1 we shared:

  • That the church’s finances are healthy.

  • How we are working together to keep them that way.
