Week 1: State of HVUUC -- Finances

As we begin a new year and the second half of the fiscal year, we wanted to share how the Board of Trustees, committees, and volunteers have worked diligently to sustain our church and members during this very different year. For the next month we will share inspirational news about the state of the church.

General Finances

Deb burns the last mortgage statement!

Deb burns the last mortgage statement!

We are financially stable. The finances for the first half of the fiscal year have gone very well. In November, we paid off our mortgage and are now the debt-free owners of all our grounds and buildings! Our income has been good due to solid support from congregational pledges, and our expenses are down from what was budgeted (see table below). Overall, we are in a strong position at the start of 2021.

Stewardship Still a Priority

Despite all that 2020 threw at us, people are still fulfilling their pledges, and fundraising is proceeding.

Grocery cart

Using grocery cards and choosing HVUUC as your Amazon Smile charity are great ways to raise money for the church with very little effort. In the past 6 months, we received $2,500 from grocery cards and $603 from Amazon Smile. These programs are almost like giving money by accident—just spend the money you would usually spend…and HVUUC receives a small percentage.

To buy grocery cards, contact GroceryCards@hvuuc.org. Richard B and Dottie B offer contactless delivery of Food City and Ingles cards.

If you shop on Amazon, go to smile.amazon.com and choose Holston Valley Unitarian Universalist Church as your charity under the Amazon Smile tab.

For more details on how to give, including how to send your pledge, visit Stewardship on our website. Your support is important. Thank you very much for your contributions to support this community and further our mission.

Staff Appreciation

Our staff has put in a lot of hard work this year and responded creatively to continuing uncertainty. In appreciation of their extraordinary efforts, the board approved a small holiday bonus for each staff member on behalf of the congregation. Thank you to our generous congregation for making this possible.

Finally, the Board of Trustees wishes you a Happy New Year! As T.S. Eliot said:

“Every moment is a fresh beginning”

Here is to new beginnings for 2021. The Board of Trustees is always available for your questions and comments. Please contact us if we can assist you at board@hvuuc.org.
