Church Yard Sale

  • HVUUC 136 Bob Jobe Road Johnson City, TN, 37615 (map)

Church Yard Sale at Bryan and Rosemary’s Home in the Tree Streets. September 12th. This allows congregants to donate bulkier and smaller items to the church and sell them to a larger audience than the Service Auction.

Facts:
• The sale officially starts on Saturday Sept 12th at 8 a.m.
• Buyers come sooner and will ask questions about stuff you are putting out. Be ready to sell.
• Activity slows by 1:30ish and dead by 3 p.m.
• Many will put out items on Friday afternoon for informal, casual buying/selling.
• If it rains, people still sell - and buyers come. But it isn't as robust a crowd.
• Any little leftover things left at the curb: scavengers will pick through that for freebees.
• Charity trucks will come by and pick up leftovers by 3-4 p.m.

Kleske Rules and expectations:
1. Our HVUUC volunteers can come as early as 6 a.m. Saturday morning to unload big items and start setting up.
2. We expect to use our full driveway for 'stuff' because our yard is small. As things sell in front, we can help move items to the front for visibility
3. We have two additional spots for parking behind house. First come, first served. Others may park where they can - on W. Walnut should have spaces. Also, I don't think W. Locust St. or W. Poplar get as much attendance, and more street parking may be there. 400 Block of Pine also has parking on both sides of the street
4. We have two plastic tables we can volunteer for use. The team will need to bring more tables.
5. Folks can start bringing carriable boxes by noon Friday and store inside.
6. Folks can bring big/heavy items on Saturday morning.
7. HVUUC team covers the $20 seller fee -for our house and the small patch the neighbor has agreed to let us use.

• Why? Each seller is supposed to pay the $20 fee to sell. If we have individual sellers not for the church, they must pay their 20$. Not sure it is worth it. Also - individual sellers take space from the church activity, and space will be at a premium.
9. Kleske’s are NOT responsible for breakage, theft, or injury.
10. Bathroom access for volunteers is provided. Water is provided. We might even offer coffee or snacks, but we aren't expecting to officially feed anyone. On sunny days, there are food vendors so we hope volunteers can take turns enjoying.
11. Anything leftover that donors want back if unsold: the team either brings back to church, or the owner picks up no later than Sunday, Sept 13th in the afternoon. Donors should make it VERY CLEAR if this is what they want. Make a list.
12. The sale team has the ability to make changes. Not Kleske’s.
13. Bryan has a super bad knee. He'll be around, but don't expect heavy participation and carrying. I will help on Saturday, flitting about and helping spell folks here and there.
14. The stairs are wonky without handrails, and we don’t want the liability for the public.
15. It serves as a rest/regroup/social space for the team and friends.

Friday?
• The team must choose if they want to participate in the informal Friday hours or only Saturday.
• Kleske’s are o.k. with it, especially for smaller items. However, we will not haul items back up onto the porch or into the house overnight. Esp. big furniture/heavy items.
• Items can be left on the porch overnight. There is risk of theft but so far, we haven't had problems yet.
• Some neighbors set up tables on Friday and cover them with secured tarps for the next day. Again, there is risk, but I haven't heard of horror stories with this. That is up to the volunteer crew/leaders.

Thoughts/tips:
• If folks have things they are donating and have idea of prices, perhaps have them submit a list with their expected prices and what they refuse to sell for. However, this limits things. Someone must find the list and know what can't be sold at x low price.
• For best flow, all folks helping with money collecting should have the authority to haggle prices.
• For big items, suggest the seller choose a price, then add 50% to that, so that they can go way down from there.
• Have stickers/tags - have donors set their own stickers and tags if possible. Many buyers hate having to ask about an unmarked item (shy or language barriers).
• People are looking for low low bargains. If one of our folks has a treasured donation they can't part with for a lowball price, it likely isn't a good candidate for a yard sale.
• Maybe have a team of four-five people for Saturday? No less than three on in a shift, and some room for folks to also roam/play/get food.
• Might be good to deliver extra tables on Friday. Up to the team.
• We have had good success with the stupid 25 cent nick-nack table: each item a quarter, or five for a dollar.  You know, the stuff that is small and goofy and not worth anything... no need for a sticker - just put that stuff on one dedicated table. It goes and no haggling for that stupid small stuff. Fun for all. I'll volunteer to make the signs.
• If some church folks have tents, they are willing to loan, that will help - with sun/heat, and rain.
