Game Night is a night of connection with other people hung on a framework of playing modern board and card games. While most games have an element of competition, this is meant as a friendly and supportive environment.
---When is it?---
The third Fridays in September through November 2023, 6:30pm – 10ish. Details below.
---Is it for me (and my people)?---
If the above wasn’t an instant YES, let’s just say that if you think you don’t like board/card games you may have not played the right one with the right people yet. Rather than an age minimum, the only real requirements are the abilities to learn/follow rules and stay engaged.
---What is a “modern” board game?---
Modern board games have their designers’ name(s) on the box, like books have authors. Modern games improve upon “classic” games by combining compelling themes, balanced game-play, meaningful decision-making, and attractive art and pieces. Many “board” games don’t even have a traditional board! Similar to books and movies there are varying levels of complexity and many genres, themes, and styles to try out. You might be surprised at what you like!
---What is the format?---
We play the games that people bring, splitting up into groups based on peoples’ preferences and experience (the hosts can help people get in a right place for maximum enjoyment). In every game there is ALWAYS at least one person who doesn’t yet know how to play, so teaching/learning the rules is always part of the deal. It is common that we have separate games going at the same time, and that each person has the opportunity to get in on multiple games in an evening if they wish. If the timing works out we sometimes mix up the groups mid-evening for extra variety.
--- What should I bring? ---
Yourself! That’s all that is required.
Optionally, feel free to bring:
* other people you like who like (or might like) board games
* snacks and drinks… just for you or to share
* a modern game or two that you can teach to others and are burning to play… we usually can’t play all the games that get brought, so be ready to persuade the group!
---Do I need to RSVP?---
RSVPing is not required but there are two good reasons to let us know you plan to attend:
you can get notified if there is a cancellation due to weather/roads
we won’t start something epic without you!
Please send RSVPs and questions to gamegroup@hvuuc.org
