Hello! I’d like to share some exciting news about the HVUUC Youth Group!
Youth Group is open to all youth who will turn 12 during this school year through those who are seniors in high school.
We took a year off last year due to COVID as we all learned how to operate in new ways.
This year we are thrilled to offer a chance for our youth to play Dungeons and Dragons (D&D)! D&D is a cooperative tabletop roleplaying game. You use pencil, paper, dice, and your imagination to create a story together. Each player creates a character they control throughout the story; players are responsible for their character’s choices and actions.
Sarah Sanders has enthusiastically agreed to be the “Dungeon Master” (DM). Brandie Worley and Cindi Huss continue as Youth Group facilitators.
Possible days/times are 1st or 3rd Sundays from 3-7 p.m.

This is an excellent way for youth to connect with each other. Players rely on each character’s unique skills and interests to create an epic story and explore ethics and values while adventuring in a fantasy realm. In the campaign Sarah S. is running, players explore ruins, solve puzzles, and defeat monsters.
Sarah S. will DM for up to two groups. Each group can have up to five players, so up to 10 youth will be able to participate in D&D this year. In addition, we will offer a couple of get-togethers for all youth, probably involving food and games or baking or crafts or outdoor fun.
Youth who are interested in D&D are committing to six 4-hour sessions (approximately once/month). Don’t worry--time will fly! We will have a waiting list if we need to, so if one youth needs to drop out another can take their place.
As usual, pizza is on the menu, and youth are encouraged to bring personal drinks/snacks or individually packaged drinks/snacks to share. We ask youth to bring $5 to cover the pizza and other expenses. All youth are welcome to participate whether or not they are able to pay, however--just let me or Brandie or Cindi know.
The first time the D&D players meet they will create a covenant, develop characters, and talk about what to expect. Each meeting after that will involve a check in, play time, supper, a time for processing after the game play of the day, and cleaning up after ourselves.
Sarah S will be preparing for the game outside of the time we play, so everyone is expected to honor that by making the best effort possible to attend every planned session. That said, if youth are ill or someone in their household is ill, we ask that they stay home.
We will play at HVUUC in the fellowship hall and will follow the church’s gathering guidelines (https://hvuuc.org/reopening-plan). We will never have more than 10 people at a gathering, including our DM and adult facilitators. Each player will have their own 6-foot table to sit at. We ask that all players and adults mask during these sessions
